Understanding the Risks
There are two main types of abortion procedures. Each ends the pregnancy differently.
Medical Abortion
Medical abortion (also known as the “abortion pill”) uses drugs to terminate the pregnancy. Mifepristone is taken first; this drug blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for the pregnancy to grow and develop.
The second drug is called misoprostol. This drug causes the uterus to contract, which expels the pregnancy from the body.
Abortion drugs cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, but risks can occur. These risks include:
- Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea)
- Fever
- Infection
- Heavy, prolonged bleeding
- Incomplete abortion (this happens when pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus—it may require surgical treatment)
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion can use a combination of drugs, suctioning, and/or surgical tools to end the pregnancy. The procedure type depends on several factors, including how far along the woman is in her pregnancy.
Though the procedure typically causes mild cramping and spotting or light bleeding, risks are possible. These risks can include:
- Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
- Cervical damage (i.e., tearing)
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
Though any abortion-related risk isn’t guaranteed to happen, it’s critical to discuss these risks with your healthcare provider and evaluate your medical history. Your safety matters.
