Ultrasound is an essential diagnostic tool that views your body’s internal structures, helps providers diagnose certain conditions, and more.
This scan can determine your pregnancy’s status, view your reproductive organs, and provide additional information you need to safeguard your well-being.
Following a positive lab-grade pregnancy test at RealOptions, you can confirm your pregnancy’s viability with an obstetric ultrasound. You deserve the gold standard of care.

How Does an Ultrasound “See” Inside Your Body?
During an ultrasound, a transducer (a small, wand-like instrument) sends sound waves through your abdomen or vagina. These sound waves bounce off your reproductive organs and the developing embryo or fetus and become images on a screen.
If you are in the first trimester of your pregnancy, you will start with a quick abdominal ultrasound and then continue with a transvaginal ultrasound. During an abdominal ultrasound gel is applied to the skin on your lower abdomen and the transducer is guided over it. You may experience light pressure during this scan. During a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is gently inserted into your vaginal canal to produce the clearest image. You may feel some pressure and should not experience any discomfort.
If you are further along in your pregnancy, in the second or third trimester, you will only have an abdominal ultrasound.
Why Should I Have an Ultrasound if I’m Pregnant?
A positive pregnancy test alone isn’t enough to confirm a viable pregnancy. You need an obstetric ultrasound to confirm key pregnancy details and help you determine your next steps.
At RealOptions, obstetrical ultrasounds are performed to:
- Determine if there is a fetal heartbeat. You will learn whether your pregnancy is viable (is progressing) or whether you have miscarried. As many as 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which may need treatment or monitoring.
- Date the pregnancy. Knowing your gestational age (how far along you are) will help clarify your pregnancy options (and if you continue the pregnancy, provide an estimated due date).
- Identify the pregnancy’s location. Some women have ectopic pregnancies, which occur when a fertilized egg does not implant in the uterus as it should. Instead, it implants in a location like a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy is life-threatening and requires emergency treatment to protect your health.
We can discuss your options after you have confirmed your pregnancy with an ultrasound. We’re committed to providing medically accurate information, prioritizing you as the patient.
