Get Tested Even When Nothing Feels Wrong
At risk for an STD? If you are sexually active, getting tested for STDs is one of the most important things you can do for your health! Our services ensure you understand the importance of awareness and early detection.
Most STDs don’t come with obvious symptoms, which is exactly why routine testing matters, not just testing when something feels off. Per CDC’s Talk. Test. Treat. guidance for patients:
- Under 25: Sexually active women should be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea every year.
- 25 or older: Some women should be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea every year, including those with a new partner, multiple partners, or a partner who has an STI.
- During pregnancy: Pregnant women should be tested for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C starting early in pregnancy. Some may also need chlamydia and gonorrhea testing or repeat testing later in pregnancy.
- HIV testing: Women ages 13 to 64 should be tested for HIV at least once as part of routine care.
- After treatment: For some STIs, follow-up testing around three months after treatment may be recommended because reinfection can occur.
These recommendations are a starting point, not a one-size-fits-all rule. The CDC notes that screening recommendations are sources of clinical guidance, not prescriptive standards.
If you’re sexually active and unsure what testing makes sense for you, RealOptions can help you figure out the next step. Our approach looks beyond the test itself, considering your sexual, reproductive, and overall health as part of your care.

Blood, Urine, or Swab: Your STD Testing Options
We make it easy for individuals to request common blood and urine STD tests. Getting blood work or urine-based test results back quickly is important for peace of mind, getting answers to medical questions, and potentially starting treatment. We understand this, so we work with Quest Diagnostics to get you your test results within 3-4 business days.
Urine Testing
Urine testing is a simple, non-invasive way to screen for certain STDs. It is commonly used to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea, depending on the type of test ordered.
Blood Testing
Some STDs are detected through a blood sample rather than urine or a swab. Blood testing may be used for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
Vaginal Swab Testing
A vaginal swab collects a small sample that is sent for laboratory testing. It may be used to test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, or trichomoniasis, depending on the test your provider recommends.CDC guidance also recognizes vaginal swabs as an appropriate specimen for chlamydia and gonorrhea testing in women.
At RealOptions, chlamydia and gonorrhea testing during an STI-only visit is done using a urine sample. Vaginal swab testing may be used when testing is part of a Well-Woman or gynecologic care visit.
Pap Testing
A Pap test is primarily used for cervical cancer screening and may also include HPV testing when appropriate, per ACOG.

What STD Symptoms in Women Actually Look Like
Many STDs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, often cause no symptoms at all, which is exactly why testing matters more than waiting to feel something.
When symptoms do occur, they tend to follow a similar pattern across multiple STDs. According to Mayo Clinic’s overview, common signs of STDs in women may include:
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Burning or pain during urination
- Pelvic pain or pain during sex
- Sores or bumps
- Bleeding between periods or abnormal bleeding
Remember: Symptoms alone aren’t a reliable way to know your status; testing is. Having one of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have an STI, as many can have other causes. A clinician at our clinic can evaluate your symptoms and help determine whether STI testing is appropriate.
For evaluation and treatment of other vaginal conditions, including yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis, learn more about our Gynecologic Care services.
Affordable STD Testing With or Without Insurance
RealOptions offers affordable STD testing and treatment, making inexpensive STD testing a convenient option for those with or without insurance who have high deductibles, want confidentiality, and/or whose doctors won’t prescribe them the lab testing they want to have done.
A $20 office visit fee applies whether or not you have insurance. Insured patients pay only the $20 office visit fee. The CDD fee and STI testing fees apply to uninsured or self-pay patients only.
Please refer to the table below for a clear breakdown of what insured and self-pay patients can expect to pay:

Frequently Asked Questions About STD Testing
It’s confidential, not anonymous. Your name is attached to your record, but results are private.
A $20 office visit fee applies either way. Self-pay testing runs $6 to $18 depending on the test, with a full panel at $49. To keep it simple, the maximum total cost for self-pay patients will be $73. If you use insurance, you will only pay the $20 office visit fee.
No. All RealOptions clinics accept walk-ins for STD testing; you can request an appointment for a shorter wait.
Turnaround time depends on the type of test, but many STD test results are available within a few days. At RealOptions, most results are available within 3 to 4 business days.
There isn’t one testing window that applies to every STD. How soon an infection can be detected depends on the infection and the type of test being used. For HIV, for example,CDC guidance puts the window at about 23 to 90 days after exposure. If you’re concerned about a recent exposure, a healthcare provider can help you decide when to test and whether repeat testing may be needed.
Urine tests can be used to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. For women, however, the CDC identifies vaginal swabs as the optimal specimen for chlamydia testing using NAATs. Urine is also an accepted specimen, so the testing method used may depend on the infection being tested for and your individual situation.
If you’re in the Bay Area, RealOptions offers full-panel and individual STD testing at clinics in Central San Jose, East San Jose, Oakland, and Union City. Walk-ins are welcome, and testing is available with or without insurance.
Depending on the tests you need, a urine sample may be collected in the clinic, while bloodwork may require a lab requisition.
