Is It Really Confidential

June 18th 2014

John* was a second year Resident Advisor (RA) at his university. In order to encourage residents to visit the campus health center, they required every RA to get an STI test to set a good example. John went to get his STI test and used his parents insurance card. The receptionist assured him that his test would be kept confidential because of doctor/patient confidentiality guidelines.

A couple weeks later and much to his surprise, he received a call from his mother. She had received her monthly insurance details with a bill for an STI test. Not only was the test quite expensive, but it also was not as “confidential” as John would have liked it to be.

Like John, many people are unaware of the intricacies of the health care system. They hear buzzwords like “free” or “confidential”, but in reality most medical services are not truly characterized by those attributes.

Any time a physician encounters a patient, they are required by law to record your visit. Because RealOptions is a licensed medical clinic, we also are legally required to record your visit in our medical records. What sets us apart from your local doctors office or government funded medical clinic, is that our pregnancy services are free and will not show up on your insurance records. Because our clinic is privately funded, our pregnancy medical services are passed through to you at no cost and we require medical insurance. Different insurance companies and states have different policies, but some send home an explanation of benefits that list visit details. This may make your “confidential” testing, not as confidential as you would like. We want you to be fully informed so that you don’t end up in an uncomfortable situation like John.

At RealOptions, we understand how scary and stressful an unplanned pregnancy can be. Our desire is to provide confidential, high quality medical care at no cost to you. We can honestly and proudly say we don't charge for the choice that you make.

Contact one of our local Pregnancy Medical Clinics if you have any questions or need to schedule an appointment.
